The Defender began its development in the 1970s as an armored version of the Islander. Since then, the product has undergone extensive development. Wanting more power, the B-N flew, but did not certify, the enlarged BN-2E Islander Super variant in 1968, which included an additional row of seats and was powered by 350 hp Lycoming O-720 engines. Instead, it developed the BN-2A Mk III Trislander, a triumph of practicality over aesthetics. It had a 90-inch stretch, a stronger rear plane and undercarriage, and a third Lycoming O-540-E4C5 engine mounted on a long tail fin. The 17-passenger "Feederliner" made a famous appearance on its first flight day at the 1970 Farnborough Air Show.

Trislanders were produced on a single production line from the standard Islander, with the first delivered in June 1971.
