T38 Vs F5 - The 1,275 F-5/T-38 aircraft in the world's fleet have been in service for a total of more than 41 years. Although these aircraft do not logically appear to be top candidates for upgrading due to their age, countries such as Brazil, Honduras, Iran, Thailand and Tunisia have moved forward to upgrade them. At the same time, the fleet of 575 aircraft has an average service life of 30-40 years which may also require upgrades.

As of 2018, T-38 Talons have trained over 72,000 USAF pilots. Many airframes in high-G supersonic flight have lasted up to 20,000 hours.

The US Air Force's 505 T-38s total more than 51 years old and are in their third service life, with five T-38Cs pending retirement. Although the USAF plans to replace the T-38s with 350 T-X trainers, improvements will continue for some time. A replacement is yet to be selected.

The USAF plans to operate its T-38 trainers until at least 2029 and continues to fund the fleet to bridge the gap.

The USAF is in the midst of an $855 million contract with Boeing to maintain the aircraft's avionics, cockpit displays and communications and control panels, and to upgrade 37 aircrew training machines.

The Pacer Classic III service life extension program looks set to run until 2026, which may push at least a portion of the fleet well into the 2030s. With money already invested in SLEP and how long the US military prefers to keep the platform in service, operational life in the 2030s starts to look more realistic.

The Navy's fleet of 44 F-5 fighter jets will increase by 21 aircraft with fourth-generation capability. The original 44 are scheduled to retire in 2025, although the retirement date may be extended. With new fourth-generation capabilities and additional inventory, budget costs are likely to increase.

Thailand, Indonesia, Bahrain, Taiwan and Botswana have recently announced plans to retire their aircraft in the near future. Malaysia will either retire its fleet, or launch an $8-$12 million upgrade program that will include SLEP airframes, new electronics and new weapons.

Iran is upgrading its fleet of F-5 fighter jets. And while Thailand has indicated it hopes to retire its fleet by 2020, spending on its current upgrade program suggests otherwise.

Switzerland is trying to hold off on the full retirement of its F-5 fleet and may continue to operate some of the fleet beyond 2019. However, the fleet will be reduced from 35 to 26 flights.

Despite the age of the world's fleet, it is declining more slowly, in part due to upgrades that have extended the life of aircraft. International fleets will see less activity from 2019-2028.
