springfield professional review

Springfield Professional Review - Almost exactly twenty years ago, I first walked into Springfield Armory headquarters for a behind-the-scenes look at the custom shop and master gunsmiths who made 1911 parts. Of course, anything labeled as TRP, Operator, or Professional had to be seen on the trip—if it made it to the FBI SWAT team and HRT, I had to see the magic that goes into the gun making process. After two decades, Springfield is releasing two new versions of its popular custom Model 1911, the 9mm Operator and the 9mm Professional.

Along with the new gun's specs and details, below is a video that highlights some of the Springfield Armory Custom Shop processes used to make the finest 1911 guns.

GENESEO, IL, March 8, 2018 – Springfield Armory announces the release of the Model Professional 1911 in 9mm with a new video documentary about its legendary Custom Shop.

Springfield Armory Sa 35 Full Review

Springfield Armory's 1911 Custom line is methodically developed with patience and precision that honors the tradition of the venerable pistol platform. Custom Shop pistols are carefully crafted by Springfield Armory Pistolsmiths to create the finest custom 1911 pistols on the market.

This remarkable attention to detail has secured Springfield Armory's Custom Shop the contract for the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) dream pistol, a professional model in .45ACP, now available in 9mm.

Often, these artisans rely on "feel," something that cannot be replicated through the imaging process and is earned through years of dedication to the platform.

"The Springfield Armory Custom Shop is a collection of over 200 years of experience trying to understand what it is to make a custom 1911 gun," said Troy Schultz, Springfield Armory Custom Shop gunsmith. "What we ultimately strive for is absolute perfection."

Don Stogsdill, Custom Shop Team Leader with 25 years of experience at Springfield Armory. , I have always treated them very well, just like I treat classic cars. They are beautifully made, solid in their construction, and come from an iconic era that predates me and my generation. I would call it general appreciation.

Nor can it be denied that they evoke emotions beyond their distinctiveness and aesthetics, knowing that the pistol was the standard weapon of the United States military between 1911 and 1985. Maybe it's my own naivety, sheer ignorance, or generational bias. , but I've also associated them simply with older technology that was once in the limelight, but has been surpassed and retired to become relics and precious memories for all modern practical purposes as firearms technology has evolved beyond them.

As a “Polymer Generation” kid who trained primarily for self defense, tactics, and sport, my primary time behind the trigger involved many gun systems revolving around plastic frames, custom components, and modularity vs. steel and standards – the problem. Whether it was building 9mm pistols or tricking out ARs (early transitions), somehow I never felt like a 1911.

Of course, no disrespect to the platform on my part, as I've always thought it was a cool design and appreciated it and the heritage behind it. The trash-talking community from an elitist modern platform that insistently extols the merits of only using newer, faster, lighter handguns over tried and true vintage guns has never meant much to me either. To be honest, it still looked silly.

New For 2022: Springfield Armory Operator M1911

With a forged steel frame and slide, the TRP is very strong, stable and reliable, ensuring it will stand the test of time.

It was apples and oranges for me. And many people like fast, beautiful cars, I appreciate them all for what they are, in different ways, but I've just developed a taste for one over the other based on my experience and my interests. It wasn't until recently that a modern style 1911 pistol hit my radar and made me reconsider all of my preconceived notions about the pistol itself. And this gun got me interested in taking my turn to actually get some "mileage" for myself. Note the 1911 Springfield TRP (Tactical Response Pistol) in stainless steel chambered in .45 ACP.

First a bit of history. In the 1990s, the FBI's regional SWAT teams were looking for a 1911 that could meet their requirements as a rugged, reliable, accurate field service pistol. Springfield bid and won the contract, beating out all other competitors for the honor, and supplied what the agencies wanted: a .45 caliber single-action semi-automatic pistol made of steel, equipped with a grip safety and a manual safety for the large finger, mounted on both hands, which houses a single column magazine.

With satin polished stainless steel, aggressive G10 grips and 20 LPI inspection, the TRP is ready to ship.

After many tests for accuracy, reliability, durability and safety guarantees, the pistol we now know as the "Professional" has lived up to and exceeded all expectations. Although this pistol is a complete pistol (with a price tag of around $3,000), it inspired Springfield's .45 ACP Tactical Response Pistol (TRP). The TRP is a 1911 pistol that reflects the design philosophy of that pistol, but at a more affordable price.

As with Professional pistols (and all Springfield Armory 1911 pistols), a key factor contributing to the strength, reliability and consistency of production of this 1911 is the heart of the pistol itself: a forged stainless steel frame and bolt. (Want to know why this is important? Read our article on comparing forged and cast steel.)

The durable, waterproof stainless steel chassis begins its life cycle as a steel billet that withstands the intense heat and pressure of an industrial forging process, is heated to a high degree, compressed and subjected to mechanical pressure, then finished on CNC machines and finished by hand. This process is superior in terms of infusing the steel with its reinforcing properties compared to frames and slides made using the casting process. The result is a beautifully polished and finished product that will stand the test of time as an heirloom in the family war chest as well as in action on the battlefield.

Aside from the Springfield TRP's perfectly satin stainless steel core, there are a few features that caught my eye and set it apart from the rest. First, the front strap and mainspring housing feature an aggressive 20 LPI (lines per inch) pattern that pairs beautifully with the aggressive matte black G10 grips.

In my hand, the model bites just the right amount to provide maximum control during a multi-hour session without being so harsh that my mitts look like hamburgers. A modern, refined and not too toothy model combines an exceptionally rigid, strong base in the palm of your hand.

The TRP handles like a well-tuned classic car and has looks that will turn heads in the range.

The grip also has a raised cutout on the left side of the panel that really improves easy access to the magazine release, which I like from an operational standpoint. And the magwell of the pistol is combined with an extended flare, making it easy to insert the magwell. I also evaluated a modern low profile combat 3 dot tritium scope.

In the hand, the Springfield 1911 TRP is comfortable, intuitively balanced, and has a certain pull that my polymer-framed pistols lack...and not because of the gun's physical weight. Although the gun weighs 42 ounces, the fact is that the 1911 simply looks more

Also, it looks and feels like an expertly crafted 1911 handgun versus a stock gun. Going back to the car analogy, as we all know, looking is one thing, driving is another. How the car actually drives provides a real test of the car's and driver's abilities.

In this range, the TRP runs extremely smoothly, like a well-oiled machine. I spent over an hour running the Springfield Armory XD-M Elite chambered in 9mm, one of my favorite polymer-framed pistols, putting lead on steel and paper in practice for upcoming tactical competitions. I think this would be a fun way to establish my baseline for what I'm most comfortable and familiar with when it comes to range practice with my regular pistol.

Admittedly, I expect the transition from TRP 1911 to .45 ACP to present difficulties and a drastic difference in performance if based solely on caliber changes and differences in operator dynamics and familiarity. However, the result was rather unexpected.
