E 9 Aircraft

A militarized version of Bombardier's Dash 8 shuttle, the E-9 is a short- and medium-range turboprop often used in short-haul regional air operations in a civilian capacity. With its short takeoff and landing capabilities, the E-9 is perfectly suited to its Air Force mission. Capabilities include air-level monitoring, telemetry recording and forwarding

Equipped with an AN/APS-143(V)-1 airborne surveillance radar adapted to detect objects in the Gulf of Mexico, the aircraft can detect a person in a life raft up to 25 miles away in the water. It links this telemetry data to the range security officer who determines the fire zone for live fire activity.

The aircraft has a fixed antenna that receives and records telemetry from test vehicles and drones flying over the Gulf of Mexico. It has the ability to transmit two UHF air frequencies from the horizon to ground sites.

The civilian modified Dash-8 was deployed to the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group in 1988 and has since supported the Weapons System Evaluation Program at Eglin AFB, Florida, by collecting maritime surveillance radar and telemetry data.

Among the programs that the E-9 supports are the advanced cruise missile proof of concept, the Fjord Navy missile program, and the F-22 Raptor missile test.
