Once the lab report is submitted, MoDOT will be able to determine if the bridge is safe, or if they should consider building a crossing lane to allow westbound traffic to use the eastbound lane.
Meanwhile, MoDOT and IDOT have issued emergency contracts to acquire additional equipment and begin necessary maintenance work. Two private companies — along with MoDOT and IDOT employees — are working on the bridge.
The westbound lanes of the bridge were closed Sunday night after cracks were found during a routine inspection of the bridge.
MoDOT said the crash in the area disrupted commute hours Wednesday morning. They are asking motorists to plan extra commute time and drive carefully. Scott Heikes, who normally works out of the company's Sunset Hills, Missouri office, said the time it took to get to work after the shutdown was too much. He said he will work in a separate office until the bridge opens.
"Until then, I'll be working in Collinsville," Hicks said. "I don't go all the way to Poplar and around. It's too long and there's a lot of traffic."
Both MoDOT and IDOT reported delays and congestion on several alternate routes for commuters entering Missouri Monday morning. Illinois Route 3 and I-64 westbound on the Poplar Street Bridge section have very heavy traffic.
Sarah Julfs is expected to make the trip to see a doctor in South St. Louis County this week.

"It was 9 a.m. and I had to leave around 6 a.m. because of the morning rush hour traffic," Julfs said.
Jolfs says she felt the effects of the lockdown, planning her meals for the week before even thinking about driving to her appointment.
"That's where we're going," she said. "We're going to South County. That's where all the shops are. That's where all the restaurants are, and I think I'm going to cook this week."
Despite the inconvenience, Julfes said she would rather extend her journey in the short term than take an unsafe route.

Both IDOT and MoDOT issued statements saying crews should inspect the bridge during the day. Once the inspection is complete, officials will have a more specific schedule for bridge repairs.
