Described as "Wi-Fi in the sky" and designed as an emergency response to the problems in Afghanistan, the BACN payload first boarded NASA's WB-57 high-altitude test facility. It was later tested and put into service in the Global 6000, a business jet chosen for its 51,000-foot altitude and 12-hour flight time. Three other Globals were equipped with this system. A BACN payload was also installed on five Northrop Grumman EQ-4B high-altitude long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. BACN provides a bridge between multiple users using different types of sometimes incompatible communication systems. A common application involves ground forces communicating with nearby support aircraft in difficult terrain, allowing important voice and data transfers between them without relying on satellite communications.
Originally designated as the RC-700 during testing, the Global 6000 has a BACN redesignated as E-11A. The Air Force assigned four aircraft to the 451st Tactical Airborne Gateway, later redesignated the 430th Expeditionary Electronic Warfare Squadron, and operated from Kandahar in Afghanistan from 2010 until the withdrawal of US forces, after which it moved its theater of operations to Al Dhafra in Abu. .
