The Navy's Blue Angels Demonstration Team will take to the skies in North Charleston this weekend.
NORTH CHARLESTON - For the first time in four years, Joint Base Charleston is holding its own air show this weekend.
On April 9-10, air show teams, including the Navy's Blue Angels, will take to the skies above the base.

The air team was supposed to perform in 2020, but the air show was canceled due to the pandemic. Since the show is not held every year, this will be the first joint base Charleston since 2018.
The event is free, but parking spaces must be reserved in advance — a new rule this year that is a result of the district's growth, according to the foundation.
"The city is big, but the foundation is not," said the lieutenant. Colonel Mark Jones, Director of the Air Expo.
That was a "lesson learned" in 2018, he said, when some cars had to queue for hours at narrow entrances. By providing parking passes, which are also free, attendance should be evenly distributed between the two days of the show, and passers-by will know in advance that they will be guaranteed entry and a parking spot.

The new system aims to create a "pleasant experience for all participants," the foundation said on its Air Expo website.
Passes are required per vehicle, not per person, but are required for each vehicle, even if one has time to park in the parking lot. The parking pass will be valid for one day - Saturday or Sunday - and one pass per vehicle is allowed. Traveling to the show via ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft is "discouraged" and there will be no designated area for drivers who wish to pick up riders.

The database provides up to 10,000 parking passes per day. So far, about 60 percent of the available passes have been taken, Jones said, and the foundation expects all of them to be taken, with Saturday ending early, as well as Thursday. About 60,000 spectators will come out to the air show on Saturday and Sunday combined, Jones said.

Military families are invited to come to the base on April 8. The full air show will be underway, but the base will not be open to the public. No parking passes will be required that day, and there will be less traffic, so those families are highly encouraged to go on Friday.
The air show doesn't start until noon, but aviation fans will be lined up during the morning opener, Jones said, to see the 24 planes that will be on display on the ground. These will include old aircraft, such as the World War II C-47, and new ones, such as the KC-46.
The C-17, which flies troops and aid around the world from Joint Base Charleston, will also be on display. A load handler on the C-17 will carry posters detailing some of the past missions it was a part of at Joint Base Charleston, Jones said.

There will also be concessions and a children's area, as well as a lighted hangar for STEM-related exhibits. Exhibitors will include Boeing Co., NASA, the nonprofit Water Mission and Charleston County Schools, Jones said. The STEM hangar will be set up all weekend for Air Expo attendees to tour, and some school groups will come to the base on Friday for field trips to see it.

There will be a C-17 demonstration, and an appearance by the Viper Demo Team at Shaw Air Force Base near Columbia, which just had its first flight in six years 2-3. April.
A "dog fight" full of pyrotechnics will be held between the P-51 fighter and the German FV-190 fighter, as well as the DH-115 Vampire fighter and the Soviet MiG-17.

With their 2020 appearance postponed due to COVID-19, the Blue Angels' game this week will be the team's first at Joint Base Charleston since 2010. Jones said they will play about an hour each day.
At most outdoor events, there is no mask requirement, no vaccine, or a negative COVID-19 testing policy. The hangar doors will remain open to increase ventilation in the STEM exhibit area.
There is no seating in the show, so audience members are encouraged to bring their own, including camping chairs and blankets.

A large crowd filled the base on Saturday for the display, which featured past and present military aircraft as well as some aerial acrobatics.
Many examples of military might are on display, such as the A-10 Warthog, the AC-130 Gunship, the Boeing DreamLifter and the F-35 fighter jet.
Men, women and children from the Lowcountry and as far away as Pennsylvania came to see several historic airplanes fly over North Charleston.

Aircraft included World War II dogfighters, several airplanes, C-17s that call Joint Base Charleston home, and the U.S.S. The Navy's famous Blue Angels.
John Surratt, who served six years in the military, expected to see the Blue Angels on the run.
"I've never seen the Blue Angels, and that's the main reason I wanted to come here to see the Blue Angels," he said. "I've never seen them before." I've heard of them, but I've never seen them, so today I'll be here to see them."
All the musicians from Saturday will also take to the skies on Sunday for another group of people.
